What is it
Opening your rights with the French public health insurance system, so your medical costs are reimbursed under the protection universelle maladie.
Do I need it
Yes, if you are settling in France. If you are employed, your employer handles the hiring formalities, but you still contact the Assurance Maladie fund where you live to finish your registration.
When
Once you have settled in France. Cover on the basis of residence requires living in France in a stable and regular way.
Where · mail
With the caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM) for your place of residence, by sending form S1106.
Documents
Completed form S1106, "demande d'ouverture des droits à l'assurance maladie"
A photocopy of your ID or of a valid residence document
Proof of the situation your cover rests on — employment or residence — as listed in the form
A complete, legible copy of your birth certificate showing parentage
EU nationals: the S1 or other portable social security document, where you have one
What happens next

- You are first given a temporary number (NIA), then a permanent social security number once your civil status documents have been checked.
- With a permanent number you can create a compte ameli, order a Carte Vitale and be reimbursed for care.
