First-time student checklist
For a non-EU student on a VLS-TS, arriving to start a degree programme. Staged by time, not by which office happens to own the form. Anything underlined has a procedure page of its own.
Before arrival
- Passport
- Visa
- University admission letter
- Accommodation proof
- Proof of financial resources
- Birth certificate
- Certified translations, if required
- Health / insurance documentation
- Banking preparation
- Digital copies of every document
- Passport photographs / e-photo, as applicable
- Travel documents
First days in France
- Confirm accommodation
- Obtain a French address
- Validate your VLS-TS, if applicable
- Register with Assurance Maladie
- Obtain / activate your social-security account
- Open a bank account
- Obtain your RIB
- Register with your university
- Apply for CAF, if eligible
- Arrange home insurance
- Arrange a mobile phone plan
- Arrange electricity / internet, if needed
- Register for transport
- Understand your residence-permit deadlines
First 30 days
- Complete outstanding health-insurance steps
- Track your social-security number
- Request your Carte Vitale, once eligible
- Create the government accounts you need
- Set up your ANEF account
- Declare a médecin traitant
- Save all administrative confirmations
- Check your residence status
